About The Artwork

Who's The Fairest of Them All? Photocopy Transfer* & Pencil on Paper 420 x 297 (500 x 400mm framed) 2010 © Copyright Sally Butcher. Original source: Eve, Max Factor, Welton *transference of photocopied images using solvents which separate the ink from the original copy allowing it to be pressed onto a fresh paper surface The work here employs techniques of printmaking and drawing. These pieces have been particularly inspired by female imagery from glossy magazines as featured in present-day advertising campaigns and fashion industry model shots. They ironically depict ideological figures of female beauty captured in doll-like poses, which are then recontextualised, following surrealist traits under a postmodern guise, to create a new encounter with elements outside the typical frame of representation.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My Art practice focuses on human conceptions of beauty, especially in relation to women, as they are mediated between art, culture and the viewer. I am particularly interested in formations of gender, power and the manipulation of desire used in contemporary mass media and often appropriate such imagery within my own work, to explore its power of seductive distortion and its ability to structure our way of seeing through everyday consumption. Within my pieces I employ techniques of drawing, printmaking, photography and painting, at times combined with hand-sewn & collage elements. I use the subjects and objects associated with feminine beauty; faces, bodies, hair, mixed with lace, ribbons, veils and flowers. These are cropped, reframed, covered and uncovered, or separated from their usual context and brought under intense scrutiny, attempting to distort and derange, to challenge our everyday assumptions of female beauty.
