About The Artwork

The print is based upon a photograph by Stuart Allen of the 'Sandpaper Suit' 2007 which I commissioned from tailor Deborah Tallentire. This sculpture was in homage to Joseph Beuys and specifically his Felt Suit of 1970, the year in which I met him while working for Richard Demarco on Strategy: Get Arts. One of my tasks was to assist Beuys in assembling The Pack and my job was to roll up the pieces of felt and strap them to the sledges. This made a powerful impact on me and I decided to try and find one day my own signature material. The one I’ve chosen is sandpaper. At first sight it’s mundane but, like felt, it can be imbued with meanings. Sandpaper can symbolise the process of attrition which can be both sensuous and abrasive, constructive and destructive, peaceful and warlike. In early 2008 I found print-maker Sheila de Rosa via The Printmaker's Council trade association's website and commissioned her to produce a limited edition of prints based on the 'Sandpaper Suit' sculpture. My requirement was unusual in that the prints were to be made using sandpaper to echo the sculpture Sheila took on this difficult assignment and approached the project creatively and flexibly offering me several solutions to the problem of creating a 'sandy' print. In the end Sheila sprinkled fine sand on the wet ink of the print to produce 'sandpaper'. The first time we met in person was for me to receive the final edition of photo-etchings which we both signed. These special 'sandy' prints of the 'Sandpaper Suit' were completed in March 2008.
