About The Artwork

Stillness Rising is Carmelo Blandino’s 2016 Monoprint Series Iris Aflame - 26 hand signed and numbered prints measuring 30” x 22” As Within, So Without -10 hand-signed and numbered prints measuring 36” x 30” Produced at Blue Acier Studio in Tampa Florida, now available for purchase. Stillness Rising was created outside normal habits of production, per the mandates of the method. Spontaneity of process and material took over in tandem, resulting in a monoprint series in which every single work possesses a life of its own. Each work is therefore a completely unique expression of Carmelo’s innermost self and the materials as they came together as the products of hard work and unknown energies. Beauty forged from within. Stillness Rising required clarity the mind – of the present, of past works and projects, of future endeavors. The present moment was acted upon as a fluid response – a conversation – not a reaction. Much like Chinese calligraphy, each monoprint is the result of a single spontaneous outflow of pure idea, not formulated on words but on movement and flow. Paint was mixed; brush and palette were kept on hand as application tools. Silence from which inner stillness arose was this knowing energy that drove the artist’s actions and directed the motion of his hands upon the paper. Stillness Rising series was run upon three different kinds of paper, each sheet lending its unique characteristics to the overall visual effect: Japanese Gampi paper – a thin, silky, nearly transparent material with pale yellow cast Japanese Rice paper – denser than Gampi, yet retaining subtle transparency BFK Rives – traditional printing paper of cotton, in white A differentness of approach, a new angle, an intuitive color choice – Blandino’s artistic platform and perspectives were continuously challenged, resulting in works that at their completion would be completely new to him as well. The subconscious guide, that voice he has learned to listen to as artist, provided the key “Aha” moment. Stillness Rising, Carmelo Blandino’s 2016 series of original monoprints, is an artistic marriage of deeply felt, spontaneous responses to ideas as they presented themselves in moments of creative execution, when materials and effort met with purest intent.

My recent flower series is inspired by the battle between memory and experience. Memories create the emotional triggers that inform the experience of the present moment. Looking deeply into my own life, I realized how powerful memories are in distorting the "now." Holding on to memories creates a weight of emotion and sentiment and with each flower I paint I am releasing a memory and inching closer into a powerful authentic moment. While creating this series, I found myself coming back to the same mantra: "I release the weight of the past to step into the lightness of the present." This series began as a way to let go of the ten years prior. I revisited and revised old work by repainting them again and again, slowly extracting my old story. Each painting represents a step towards freedom from the known and the cultivation of a new persona. I began painting with my left hand and transitioned from oil to acrylic, obliterating every connection with the past. With each brushstroke the past dissolved and revealed the present. My transformation was documented through the form of a flower and acknowledging the graceful dance of life. Carmelo Blandino was born to Sicilian parents in Tubingen, Germany, and grew up in the culturally charged city of Montreal, Quebec. He studied art and design at the local colleges and began a successful career as a freelance illustrator, working with architects, designers, and advertising agencies. In 2002 Blandino shifted his focus and indulged in the world of fine art. Today, his paintings are widely known for their immediacy and lascivious expressions of colour, movement, and shape. His work is exhibited in New York, Palm Beach, Naples, Stockholm, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and his beloved Montreal. He has conducted summer workshops at Von Liebig Art Center of Naples, Florida, and taught drawing for many years at Dawson College in Montreal before transplanting himself to Naples, Florida where he lives today. www.blandino.ca www.carmeloblandino.tumblr.com
