About The Artwork

Part of a series of work done while an artist-in-residence in Nova Scotia in September 2014. I created a series of interventions with fishing rope I found tangled everywhere on the beach and used my camera to record my actions. For Tide Lone, I strung a 250 foot rope between two rocks, marking the high tide line. This is an unframed archival inkjet print. This is a limited edition of 12. A reproduction of this work was featured on a 20 foot banner for the show "Elemental" at the Munson Williams Art Institute in Utica NY in 2016.

I am a New York Artist who does sculpture, works on paper and photographic work. My work focuses on specific forms that have strong symbolic meaning, either to me personally or to the culture at large. Through manipulation of context my work examines underlying contradictions that I find in these symbols, either via my personal experience or observations of the world around me. Often, the symbols from one distinct series merge with another in the way that the events of one's life seamlessly connect to one another. The landscape and rural culture of Upstate New York informs my work with a seductive melancholia. Underlying all of the work is an autobiographical search for personal meaning. Most recently I have been creating ephemeral interventions in the landscape and using photography to document the process. I use a broad range of processes and materials such as steel, wood, photography, cement, mold making and bronze. I let the ideas dictate the medium and maintain a broad working vocabulary so that the expression of my ideas is not limited by a narrow approach.
