I took this photograph on Black and White film using a Hasselblad camera in Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, in 2001. A perfect Gift for Christmas or Birthday! One of my Omani friends operated an antique shop in the traditional souq (market) of Mattrah. When I said I wanted to take some photos of these khanjars, he said, “Take them with you, and return them when you’ve finished.” I was amazed at his generosity, but from experience I now know that this is typical of Arab friendship: once you are friends, you are friends for life! So I carefully took these khanjars with me to photograph. I was a little nervous, because at that time, they were for sale in his shop for around $US1000 each! I took them to a local beach at low tide, where there was some nice lush moss on the rocks on which to lay the khanjars. In Oman, each region has its own design of khanjar; these khanjars come from the Sharqiyah region, which includes the regional capital, Sur. Keywords: Middle East, Dhofar, Oman, Sultanate of Oman, GCC, Arabia, Arab, handcrafted, filigree, leather, belt, dirk, ornate, black and white.
