About The Artwork

‘In my work I have never strived to make a perfect photograph, in fact I have embraced the imperfections and accidents in the photographic process.’ Working exclusively with polaroid materials for the past 30 years has been an infinite source of creative expression and inspiration. I have had a lifetime fascination with trying to explore what exits below the surface, an investigation into the complexities of time and change. The images began as a portraits now exist as an abstract reflection of another dimension. It is an evolution of one reality blending into another. The physical and metaphorical transformation of the negative’s structure generates a new image resulting in an abstract reflection of the world around me. This departure of ordered thought into non-structure, from tangible to abstract, allowed the release of trying to control my surroundings, my life and my art. My many years spent, as a jazz musician was also a source of inspiration, which moved me into the direction of working in the moment much like improvisation. *Limited Edition 1 of 15

Lisa Folino born 1958, Northridge California,United States. I have spent most of life as an artist and a musician. Photography was introduced to me at an early age by my father. I live and work as a fine art photographer in Newport Beach, California.Since the early 1990's I have been using Polaroid film/materials. Most of my photography involves experimentation and the alchemy of transformation. "Grace and Truth" is a series of images which took 7 years to transform through a chemical manipulation of the film. Like a fossil or a fresco, time has played an important role in the expression of this work. "Shadows and Light" explores the way in which we perceive reality through the still life. It is also a journey into our dreams. The portfolio "Prima Materia" is a complete degradation of the image. This reveals an abstract realty which exists below the surface of the photographic image."
