And when I was born I came out of the womb clutching a pencil and a sketch pad, Ive still got them somewhere. And although over the years my passion for drawing waned, my fervour for installation and sculpture flourished and my talent bloomed. Or so Id hope to think.
And I dont like to be tied down to subject matter or ways of thinking. So I threw all my string away. And although I dont like to be tied down, I do find myself swimming through re-occurring themes, loosely based around: absence and presence, basic human emotions and creating an experience for the, sometimes unsuspecting, viewer. And I am concerned with creating mental acrobatics. I want your mind to summersault through a range of prerequisite emotions and actions. I want my work to trigger the laughter switch in your brain before your conscience and morality comes into play, and you quickly reel in that scoff that you oh so quickly spat out.
And my practice has never been capricious; every detail is picked over, (like a crisis has ensued.) Until everything is perfect, perfectly idiosyncratic
And recently Ive become interested in subverting the notion of art, turning it on its head. And art traditionally is something to be stood in front of and mused over, but I wish to create something that the viewer cant or wont look at, either deeming it too disgusting or simply not wanting to deal with the difficult thoughts that collect in their head.
And I justly believe that art that isnt charged with emotion is worthlessly empty. And if art isnt made with love and passion and emotion then it has nothing to re-distribute amongst the viewer. And as I understand it the word for inputting emotion into something is cathexis. And cathexis is everything I am and everything that I do. And if art doesnt make you feel emotion or make you think or make you laugh, then what purpose does it serve?
