A luminous grammar emerges from a corner eatery, Queens, New York City. Light pours in, as parts fill up the whole. A single exposure window reflection yields a collage of layer and color. I am indebted here to modernist touchstones, such as Matisse’s “Bathers by a River” (1909-1917, Art Institute of Chicago), where leaps in temporality and fragmentation inform my own perception. Later, remarkable photorealist painters -- such as Ralph Goings and Richard Estes -- enthrall me with scenes of diners, and a heightened materiality of daily consumption. It intrigues and inspires me to work “inside out”: to inhabit these paintings’ engagement with the captured moment, then turn back to inflect photographic compositions. Suitably, my favorite Hahnemühle Fine Art paper, Photo Rag Bright White 310, exhibits beautifully both as painterly surface and incandescent reflection. Still Life: As in, arrangement, table, chair, color, glass, form, shadow, substance. Motion: As in, walking, eating, chatting, texting, traffic, gesture, community. Lexicon: The vocabulary of a person, language, or branch of knowledge; an inventory. In linguistics: the complete set of meaningful units in a language. Corona (astronomy): white or colored circle(s) of light seen around a luminous body. Corona (geography): a neighborhood in the borough of Queens, NYC. Edition of 5 + 1 A/P and 1 P/P. Printed exclusively for the artist by Brooklyn Editions' Master Printmaker, New York City. Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White, with Hahnemühle Certificate of Authenticity. Archival pigment inks printed with Epson P20000.

PRÉCIS + PROCESS + PAST-PRESENT: PRÉCIS: Light continuously shifts and suffuses. Never quite known, light occasions fresh perspectives for the attentive eye. Photography for me inhabits a space somewhere between poetry and motion picture film, my primary areas of advanced training. INSPIRATION: As many of my recent photos were taken in New York, I sometimes reflect upon the wisdom of gifted New York photographer, Saul Leiter. Leiter suggests, "there are things that are out in the open, and there are things that are hidden, and life has more to do, the real world has to do, with the things that are hidden. You think?" I offer my recent work in a spirit of discovery, a search for "the things that are hidden." PRINTMAKING PROCESS: Signature editions printed exclusively for the artist by Brooklyn Editions' Master Printmaker, New York City. PAST-PRESENT: I grew up as an artist, and gradually branched into other media. Crossing boundaries and investigating form naturally extend my creative and writerly output. Earlier, I worked on aesthetics with late philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. Temporal and phase transitions -- chemical, Kantian, disjunctive -- and a delight in the process of naming inform and inflect my work.
