About The Artwork

Triptych, Central part, Photo Collage From the series ARTISTS IN ACTION Unique copy 120 x 40 cm (3 squares à 40 cm) Digital C-Print on PVC high gloss adhesive film, mounted on Alu-Dibond-Plates. This triptych has been purchased by the Prince of Hohenzollern. © 2011 Martina Rall. All rights reserved. Karl Friedrich, Prince of Hohenzollern, in jazz music called „Charly“, I portrayed during two concerts and made a triptych collage of the photos. His portrait is the only collage in my series. Maybe because to me he represents a person with a kind of double identity: Prince due to birth and musician by passion. He is living two lives, one traditional and official with losts of obligations and reponsibilties, and the other in the free and creative space of art. Jazz is not just music to him, but a way of live. The tension between etiquette and freedom he lives in, makes his performances so very special and exciting. To me Prince “Charly” represents both, the emperor and the fool. Karl Friedrich of Hohenzollern is also a lover and collector of art. When I presented him his triptych in his old and giant city castle in Sigmaringen, I felt like stepping out of the flux of time and imerging in a kind of dream. ARTISTS IN ACTION Since 2010 I am focusing on a photo series about “Artists in Action”, portraying European artists from various fields: musicians, authors and actors at work, in order to explore the creative process and the fascination of art. This series started with the artist portrait of Mirella Leone, a very talented and expressive young Italian soprano singer. In 2011 I realized a triptych photocollage of HSH Karl Friedrich, Prince of Hohenzollern as well as the groovy German jazz musician, known as "Charly”. In 2012 I portrayed the German bestselling author Peter Prange during his work in his home office, at the University Library Tuebingen and during a book presentation. From 2013 – 2015 I have been working on an artists portrait of the Swiss actor Roland Koch. In November 2013 I photographed him during the filming of the popular German crime series "Tatort" in Constance/Germany, in June 2014 during his work as theatre director at the "Lokremise" in St. Gallen/Switzerland and in January 2015 in Vienna/Austria at the famous Burgtheater, where Koch since 1999 is part of the ensemble, and at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, where he is working as an acting teacher. In 2015 I photographed the American Conductor Myron Romanul, Conductor at the Nationaltheater Munich, Germany, Principal Conductor of the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra and Guest Conductor at His Majesty's Theater in Perth, Australia, and the Opéra national du Rhin, France. Recently I also began writing about my exciting meetings, that became more intense with Roland Koch, approaching the person behind the artist and reflecting the creative process in portraying, published in the first issue of APP, a magazine about art, photography and poetry. For my "Artists in Action" series I chose the form of the triptych, because it allowed me to portray various facets of the artistic expression and because in this way results a kind of motion portrait. With this series I intend to picture movement in the still. I also like the tension curve which is built up in the triptych and leads to a central expression, a kind of quintessence in the middle part. And, by the way, I consider triptychs, with their original religios connotation, ideal for portraying personalities. Because many of them are worshipped and adored like Gods. I am realizing the prints in high gloss, so that they result like mirrors in confront of the viewer. To express that these artists are identification figures, first of all to me, but also for the public. Born in Germany, Martina Rall studied Italian and German literature as well as linguistics at the Universities of Tübingen and Parma/Italy (M.A.), and later on Fine Arts at the Academy of Arts in Nürtingen. She worked first as a concept and graphic designer before she devoted herself to her artistic career. As a multi-faceted artist, Martina Rall uses different techniques and materials in her artworks: graphics, paintings, photographs and writings. In Art she focuses on a mixed media series of Icon Self Portraits "Being Marilyn Monroe" and a photo series about “Artists in Action”, portraying European artists from various fields: musicians, authors and actors at work, to explore the creative process and the fascination of art. From Pop Art to Cindy Sherman photography or Russian cinematography, the inspiration behind her work combines an interesting blend of artistic expressions. Her mixed media selfportrait series “Being Marilyn Monroe. Icon Portraits” is influenced by the work of surrealist female artists like Frida Kahlo and Niki de St. Phalle as well as by Italian author Luigi Pirandello's post-modernist approach on identity theory. A series of coincidences brought Martina Rall to explore and re-think the inherent nature of her work and provides a practical meaning to the American poet William Carlos Williams' quote:' «The artist is always and forever painting only one thing: a self-portrait».
