About The Artwork

I always look for new ways to look at everyday items, architecture, things that we see everyday but don't take the time to view them differently. This is an Abstract view of an Architectural Crest made for the Brunton Hall Theatre in Musselburgh in 1971, it sits on the face of the Building as you come into Musselburgh from Edinburgh and is Gold in Colour, I loved the Abstract Landscapes that I could see in the crest and took a series of Photographs which I called Golden Musselburgh

Hi All, I'm Nicola Graham and I have been working as an Artist for 10 years. I have been drawing, painting and writing all my life. I have always found it difficult in describing my Artwork, as I am a Self Taught Artist, I always found my style so different from other Artists that I did'nt really tick all the boxes of the contemporary artists out there so you can imagine my joy in discovering Outsider Art. Sometimes referred to as Art Brut which means Rough or Raw Art. First coined by the Artist Jean Debuffet, the term Outsider Art encompasses working in solitude with a pure and authentic creative impulse. I always work in a meditative state, creating images as they appear in my minds eye. I also like to use my thoughts & emotions in my work where there is a prescence of spirituality & religious undertones throughout my work. I like to tackle subjects such as Emotions, feelings, spirituality and our place in the world. Viewing life from other Dimensions, Time & Space. What lies beneath the fabric of our world. To Provoke Thought. I have always had a Spiritual Nature and am interested in many Subjects such as Philosophy, Poetry & Music, the Arts, History, Physics & Astronomy. I love to work with a variety of materials includings Oils, Acrylics, Gouache & Pastels but due to spinal chord compression & chronic pain I took up photography which has now become the more dominant medium as well as the odd ink drawing as it is much easier for me to work with. I have always been creative from an early age and would describe myself as a Self Taught Artist, interested in Perception and how it applies in art. I did study Art at school as well as studying some Art History with the Open University. I hope you enjoy browsing my PhotographyArtwork.
