About The Artwork

An archival pigment print from a drum scanned 4x5 B&W negative image size approx 14 3/8" x 19" plus 3/4" handwritten caption below image on 17x22" paper Negative from Dec 2000, archival pigment print Aug 2018 Print #1 from Edition I of 25 + 2 A/P archival pigment prints I used Epson Legacy Platine paper for this image, a heavy smooth satin finish paper that closely emulates a darkroom print, and retains a photographic realism. The non-printed area produces a beautiful finish I like when adding a caption. I have a series of car shots made in the Los Angeles area. I like to think they are car shots only sort of about cars, revealing something beyond the car itself. I prefer the cars in their native environment--they reveal more of a portrait if that is not stretching the bounds of anthropomorphism. See added photo for the hand lettered caption, transcribed from the actual For Sale sign: For Sale--1950 Caddy "This car needs paint & upholstery only. One owner last 40 years. Ask for Dave." This photograph is not framed

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
