About The Artwork

Cuban patriot, overlooked by Che... Photography: Black & White, Large Format and Film on Paper. Cuba. A nation sitting at a temporal cross roads. All but the last remnants of the United States blockade have been swept away by the Obama administration; diplomatic ties renewed. The country waits, poised in anticipation of a great financial renaissance, for better or worse. I arrived in Cuba with a simple, yet ambitious concept, to capture the essence of its greatest city before the inevitable wave of change. So where is that essence to be found and where will the changes begin? I feel that Havana will witness the coming changes first. There, in that beautiful sprawl, the most powerful aspects of Cuba are plain to see; in the faces and character of its people, and in its most stalwart of residents - their automobiles. The aim of this project is to capture the essence of Havana before the next revolution takes hold. As the inevitable tide of unhindered tourism turns, will the accompanying wave of camera toting tourists and their dollars change those smiling faces? Will those iconic cars be shipped off to collectors in North America or further afield, making way for bland, characterless modernity and in-built obsolescence? Large Format Print on Hahnemuhle 308 gsm, archival/museum grade photo rag. Keywords: malecon, car, cuba, havana, ford, Jan Schoof Photography, Havana Heretoforever?

If time is a mellifluous river, then photographs are the temporal stepping stones on which the viewer can stand, mid-flow in the present to look back upon the past. As a child I sat fascinated by my father’s photography of Africa, transported by the vast landscapes and intimate portraits, eyes that fluoresced and horizons that beckoned me forth. The power of photographs to take the viewer to a place of quiet contemplation was thus instilled in me from an early age. As a young man I set out to answer the challenge of those horizons. Drifting from culture to culture the relationship of my art to time becomes ever clearer, as does a growing sense of man’s disconnection from nature, its seasons and cycles, ultimately a disconnection from the self. Through my work, I seek to distill the essence of humanity and nature, from the boundless to the intimate. From the minutiae of man’s diaspora to the grandiose wilderness of our ever diminishing world.
