CHROMASCAPE 047: NYC SKYLINE AT SUNSET FROM PAULUS HOOK PIER JERSEY CITY, NJ | 2022 I set up for this Chromascape at the end of the Paulus Hook Pier in New Jersey and waited for the sun to set behind me and illuminate the NYC skyline. The sky was crystal clear blue and for a few short minutes the setting sun’s golden light reflected off all the windows and shiny metal in the city was magnificent and intense. My process of combining very long exposures with highly controlled camera movement is all about capturing light and blending colors. The result here is a magical image that captures only the bright evening sky and all the gleaming sunlight reflecting off the millions of city windows. All the dark buildings and city structure are an absence of light that doesn’t even register in the final exposure. It’s fun to point out that the faint line in the top third of the frame is light reflecting off the top of the Freedom Tower. This is Chromascape 047. ~ Marc All photographic effects are captured in-camera while on location combining precisely controlled movement with a single long-duration exposure. These are not post-production Photoshop effects or composites. All Chromascape photographs are meticulously printed by Marc McClish in his studio located at 8200’ in the Rocky Mountains above Boulder, Colorado. Prints are made on Moab Entrada Rag paper, a 100% Acid-free cotton rag paper using Canon Pro archival pigment inks. All images are printed with 1.5 inch white border and are numbered and signed on the front. Prints should be unpacked and handled only by an experienced framer. A signed and numbered edition card is provided to affix to the back of the frame after mounting and framing. A signed Certificate of Authenticity also included. Marc McClish studied at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA from 1991-94. In 1994, Marc moved to NYC and spent the next five years assisting Richard Avedon, four as his first assistant and studio manager. Avedon was a master of using light while making a portrait or fashion image and then working with the printer in the darkroom to give the photograph the emotional and visual presence he wanted to put into the world. Probably the greatest gift from Marc’s time working with Avedon, was becoming a master black and white printer with a critical eye and exacting standards. Upon leaving Avedon’s studio, Marc opened a custom black and white lab, SilverWorks, in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. SilverWorks’ clients included Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, James Nachtwey, Bruce Davidson, Frank Ockenfels III, Patrick Demarchelier, and Richard Avedon to name a few. In 2006, Marc closed the lab and traded the city life for the Rocky Mountains, moving with his (then) young family to the mountains above Boulder, CO. Today, Marc continues to live in a house he designed and built at 8200' in the Rocky Mountains and makes Chromascapes of places he visits. It’s been an adjustment trading the interactive dance with the enlarger light, rocking the developer tray while the images appear on the paper, and the solitude of the darkroom for a souped up Mac and big Canon printers. Despite the changes in processes, Marc still feels the same thrill that he used to experience in the darkroom, working in his studio today making big beautiful prints. THE CHROMASCAPE SERIES ARTIST'S STATEMENT: CHROMA | 'kröma | noun | intensity of hue; saturation of a color. -SCAPE | skeip I combining form | denoting a specified type of scene: landscape As a technical photographer who is drawn to beautiful light and color, I find great pleasure seeking opportunities to blend and abstract found scenes. All images and photographic effects are captured in-camera while on location combining precisely controlled movement with long duration exposure. Many images are created during twilight while nature’s colors change rapidly with the rising or setting sun. I find standing in one place witnessing the morphing intensity and saturation of light and color rejuvenates my spirit. Each photograph holds a memory of a place or person I was there to visit.
