Brown Self-Portrait, from The Visitor Photograph - Limited Edition of 5

From the Series, The Visitor, Walking 1000 Miles through Mexico. This is from a project I did for 40 years from 1983 - 2022. During the project I walked more than 1000 miles through the largest cities in Mexico, including Ciudad Obregon, where this image was. Surrealism is one of my primary interests. Here I was able to do a self-portrait via a shadow, set against a patched wall on an empty lot, with graffiti on the wall, and tall grass in the dirt. One of my favorite artists from history, the Italian metaphysical painter Georgio DiChirico said that "There is more mystery in the shadow of a man walking in the sun than in all of the religions of the world." Here there is mystery in the shadow and the surroundings. Although I was standing, and not walking, DiChirico's quote seems apt. I like in all of my work to provide beauty and provoke thought.
