From a troubled childhood he was able to work his way up to television-director and then to successful book author and artist. In the field of photography he is an autodidact who uses his photography to tell stories that are laden with symbolism and hidden messages. His work has a fast growing fan base (on Instagram he has some 25.000 followers) that appreciate his narrative art, his lighting and his use of pastel-like colors. Furthermore, Karl is famed for his magnificent (semi) nude portraits, which stand out from the mainstream by their conceptualization and aesthetics. Next to an artist, Karl is the author of several internationally acclaimed non-fiction books. He is a member of the British Historical Writers' Association, as well as a series consultant for networks like History Channel.
