The Ardvreck Castle is thought to have been constructed around 1590 by the Clan MacLeod family who owned Assynt and the surrounding area from the 13th century onwards. Sutherland, the area in which Ardvreck is situated, has long been a stronghold of the Clan MacLeod. The most well known historical tale concerning the castle is that on 30 April 1650 James, Marquis of Montrose, was captured by the Laird of Assynt and held at the castle before being transported to Edinburgh for trial and execution. Montrose was a Royalist, fighting on the side of King Charles against the Covenanters. Montrose was executed on 21 May 1650, by hanging, drawing and quartering. Clan MacKenzie attacked and captured Ardvreck Castle in 1672, and then took control of the Assynt lands. In 1726 they constructed a more modern manor house nearby, Calda House. A fire destroyed the house under mysterious circumstances one night in 1737 and both Calda House and Ardvreck Castle stand as ruins today. Whilst in my work I use digital Canons and Nikons and Fujis and the out-of-camera files are being put through Lightroom and Photoshop, I always limit post-processing to the absolute minimum, in an attempt to retain as much as possible of the original atmosphere. To put it in another way, what you see is largely what I saw and experienced in real life at the time the original photograph was taken. This is the first of a series of a five-print limited edition. It is sized 16x24' and is printed on high-quality Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White 100% Cotton 310gsm paper. Titled, numbered and signed in pencil by the artist. The artwork ships in a box.

Bulgaria
I was born in 1963, in Burgas, at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, where I had my first exhibition of photography as early as 1982. As many as a dozen exhibitions plus many publications followed in Bulgaria, Poland, and the UK. I left the country altogether in early 1989 and settled in Denmark. In the 1990s I worked in media and lived in Copenhagen, London, Munich and Prague. My interest in photography was kept alive by contributing regularly to pre-digital and therefore now defunct magazines such as Katalog in Denmark, Creative Camera in the UK, European Photography in Germany and Bildtidningen in Sweden. In the 2000s I settled in Sofia, Bulgaria where I publish Vagabond, Bulgaria's English Magazine, and photography-related books. Some of the recent titles include A Guide to Jewish Bulgaria (2011), Ottoman Bulgaria (2011 and 2012), Hidden Treasures of Bulgaria (2014), Thracian Bulgaria (2015) and Roman Bulgaria (2016). My entitled The Bulgarians was published in 2016. The latest titles are A Guide to Communist Bulgaria (2018) and A Shadow Journey/Elizabeth Kostova's Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. All of those are on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.
