About The Artwork

Weather from the Atlantic ocean causes dramatic skies with an atmospheric light which would turn any scene into a glorious panorama. Co Waterford possesses such skies abundant with colour and beauty. For the 'being here' project the sky is an important part of my paintings. The built environment grows and changes with time resulting in our skyline to change. When something new and modern appears on our skyline it reminds us of change and growth. In contrast to this we are reminded of what is old. structures such as wind turbines can now be found throughout Europe or even throughout the world, keeping us connected. We are reminded of modernization and globalization. By focusing on what is universal we are reminded of what is unique. The skyline is always unique to a place and Waterfords one tells many stories. My aim was to make these paintings aesthetic images of contemplation. Contrasting the stillness and solidity of the structure with the energy and flux of the skies. Taking inspiration from my immediate surroundings it seems right for me to base this project on the dungarvan and west Waterford area where I live. I am attracted to the overlooked and hidden beauty of what could be seen as inconspicuous and mundane.

tamsin_is@yahoo.co.uk A resident of Co. Waterford, I have recently completed an honours degree in visual arts in Waterford Institute of Technology. I have had an interest in the tradition of painting from an early age and like to paint in oils, acrylic or watercolours. Having completed a graphic design course in 2001, much of my work is influenced by so called "˜new media' such as photography, film, video and internet images. The images which I create deal with the world of appearances in particular the human figure. By using ready made images as my inspiration and through much manipulation of materials, my paintings result in an exploration of human form. My use of paint can be disciplined in some areas and loose in other areas. This contrast of freedom and restriction makes a painting interesting to me.
