About The Artwork

Woodlands are atmospheric places full of shadow and brilliance, inky, hidden depths and long vistas. Light-loving plants flourish in the bright places and put on colourful displays as the days shorten when fungi start to push up through the dark, damp leaf litter as the chill of winter deepens. This work, in my style of abstract realism, is on a favourite paper, Arches cold pressed 300gsm and I have used a restricted palette of Indigo, Quinacridone rose and Indian yellow. It's a 'blob' work where I put an abstract pattern of watercolours onto my paper and when I'm happy with the composition and placement I spend time looking at the paint before I decide what to 'make of it'. Once the idea forms in my head I work in watercolour to realise my intentions. This painting is dynamic and striking and turned into everything I wanted it to become. It is matted with a cream mount and in a white wooden frame with a white slip. Ready to hang.

I have drawn for as long as I can remember, my childhood endeavours becoming more proficient through my determined practice over the years. Throughout my adult life I have continued to draw, an activity that gives me great pleasure and satisfaction. I am an enthusiastic student of the techniques of the Old Masters and their widely varying portrayals of the human body, common to all, unique to each, and always challenging and inspiring to depict creatively. I am self-taught and paint in watercolour and, more recently, acrylic. I use a limited palette and only 3 or 4 top-quality brushes. I utilise the storehouse of impressions I have built up from my travels as a musician. My subconscious reworks these initial ideas in vivid, remembered dreams which become the inspirations for my work. www.studiobluesea.com www.studiobluesea.wordpress.com
