About The Artwork
I only ever met the legendary Charles Mingus once, and it was during his last year on this earth. He was in a wheelchair at this point, but as always he had a larger presence than everyone around him. Truly. I was in awe of Mingus, as were dozens of others that flocked to him as soon as he showed up at the party, including several of his contemporaries that he has jammed with over the years. We hung on his every word. Wherever he went throughout his life; everyone was always intrigued by what they might learn When Mingus Speaks. This piece was painted on four pieces of random length hardwood flooring scraps and four pieces of trim scraps that were attached vertically to form this "canvas". [Note that the top is not flat across the piece.] Is it a painting? Is it a wall hanging? Yes. Why the title? The bold colors and the unique nature of this piece just reminded me somehow of Charles Mingus and the music he gave to the world. Hardware attached. When Mingus Speaks is ready to hang wherever one-of-a-kind original art should be hung.

After a 30 year career in advertising and sales leadership I escaped the corporate media world a few years ago and can now focus on creating my own work. In other words, I'm an outsider artist that has decades of ideas pouring out. My intent is primarily to create pieces of art that are highly visual and interesting to enjoy and study... but may often express ideas, ask questions, unearth feelings, debate opinions, or sometimes be provocative. Like many paintings though, they're often just a combination of lines, shapes, colors, textures, and space. That said; I hope my work presents a UNIQUE combination of art elements to you and that you like what you see. Better yet, I hope you believe some of my pieces should be included in your collection. I've traveled the world but have always lived in the Philadelphia area. While I have no formal training as an artist, I've been a photographer and I've been around the art community my whole life. My wife Suzanne works as a Docent for the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and together we've raised three wonderful sons that are all now making their own way in the world. We have a home and our studio in Chester County PA with our Bernese Mountain Dog; Mr Charlie.
