About The Artwork

acrylic on wood panel each 18x12" (45.7x30.5cm), total 14 pieces, 2013 I worked for a small online shop selling handmade costumes, and I communicated with my clients solely through email, messenger programs, and social media. Often I could gather more information about clients, such as race, age, and tastes, based on their profile pictures, messenger photos, and details of their request. Most of my clients were young women. I drew images of these young women, who strive for self-expression and creativity through social media. Even so, I sense their boredom, fear, and frustration, as well as my own, in adapting to a mundane life and rigid social structures. While representing the issues of adaptation to society, I also question the power relation between seeing and being seen in female nudity. Thus, the stories behind the paintings become complex and multi-layered.
