I was inspired by the light of Spring, including the light that seems to emanate from land at the time of the Vernal Equinox, the kind of light that appears to make lambs bounce up from the earth, as if in defiance of gravity. The gold leaf gilt frame is an integral part of the work itself, as light is the keynote of this work, which includes an egg/oil tempera mix, with all elements in a carefully meditated balance. The ingredients of this work celebrate solar qualities. It is an imaginative work, not based on any actual landscape. The blue sky is a blue that was created through a careful combining of pigment to have a very matt quality through egg tempera, which of itself has an internal radiance caused by the substance of egg yolk, which complements the light yellow greens of Spring. I have thought of this work as a kind of Golden Fleece, an experience of innocence, freshness and beginnings. Emily Dickinson describes the March and April line as a "magical frontier". There is some magic in this painting. Hence the title.
