Carved from two blocks of Parian marble, most likely by Alexandros son of Menides, a citizen of Antioch of Maeander, circa 150BCE, the Venus de Milo is an exemplar of Hellenistic sculptural tradition which reflects older masterpieces. Housed in the Louvre since 1821 it is thought by some to be a representation of Amphirite the Greek goddess of the sea, and by others to be Aphrodite the goddess of victory, fertility, and prostitution. In any case, under any name, the sculpture is seen as a timeless ideal of feminine beauty. This painting of the Venus at the Louvre is composed on a 9.5x12.5inches, 25% cotton, 300GSM, cold pressed acid free paper that will hold and maintain its vibrancy over time. It depicts the Venus in its contemporary setting, providing a glimpse into the realm of the ideal to people who have made the time to seek beauty. The audience milling in the background, rendered softly compared to the bold sculpture which takes centre stage, shows both how our lives are pale in comparison with the products of art and how artistic creations imbue life itself with an aesthetic significance because we can all either create or enjoy art works.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website www.Middlebrowse.com
