Unnatural Selections: The Old Man & His Bride Painting

The Old Man has plied many trades over the millennia. Notably, he has been a farmer, hunter, warrior, politician and physician. However, his most important role has been that of a seer. Throughout the ages he as been sought out by those seeking guidance. He regards his abilities as a sacred gift and refuses to give counsel to those with frivolous requests. Through the ages his Bride has faithfully kept the home and raised their children. She has been with the Old Man through innumerable adventures, good and bad. She is strong of mind and does not hesitate to speak her truth. This is the fifth painting in the “Unnatural Selections” series. Historical references: The composition of this work is based on the poses, clothing and settings common in late 19th and early 20th century photographs and paintings. The glass beads attached to the Old Man’s skull are inspired by the Venetian glass trade-beads commonly used by the Plains Indian tribes of North America. Among certain tribes, the skulls of those thought to have the gift of foresight were kept as totems to be consulted on matters of great importance. Gifts of beads or cloth were attached to the skull when seeking guidance.
