The painting focuses on a surface theme of summer just past its zenith, with a group of people harvesting sunflowers. It helped me explore the subconscious, and universal experiences of love and loss, this included the memory and mystery of how the darkening sun affects the life of giant sunflowers, which have grown so tall from tiny seeds. I gave the painting the French name 'tournesol', because of the way the heads of sunflowers so noticeably turn to follow the sunlight. Sunflowers have such radiance and power to restore optimism. When exhibiting this painting, many people who were experiencing bereavement related particularly strongly to it, others felt the warmth and mysterious interplay of colour, light and darkness. I am always very moved to hear the different ways that people respond to this picture, especially as this work also has special meaning to me, not easily translated into words. Colour is the language of this work. It received a commendation by 'Aesthetica'. The picture was also selected to feature on literature published by Richmond Council, UK, a few years ago.
