About The Artwork
This work references the June 1886 Eruption of Mount Tarawera in New Zealand. The image is based on photographs taken from the ash buried surroundings after the eruption. The event is famous and in national folklore for the sighting of a phantom warrior canoe seen on Tarawera lake shortly before the eruption. It was seen by numerous people both Maori and Pakeha at that time. The term "To hell in a handcart" is an expression of bad times ahead and a lowly way to get there in the process. Its painted on good watercolour paper.
