About The Artwork
I drew the tower in the open air, over three periods. Then, I took the easel and paints out and painted the tower in the open air, as well. But I'm not sociable, and what with people thinking I was a vagrant; and the school kids telling me that it was a really good work as they went by on their way home from school (which I don't mind); and some people throwing stones at me; and after a woman asked me if I was French - I decided on the second attempt that it was too much trouble. I just did the colouring in the 'studio'. There is a part of me which paints, asking: 'Why are you doing this?' and the other part of me says, 'Well, it will all be gone before long'. Words like 'while I was fishing in the dull canal on a winter evening round behind the gashouse' come to my mind. It's a local scene to where we live.

I draw, and then I paint. I do so naively, classically. Art is the imitation of reality. It allows life to appear as it is. Art as pure Aristotelian imitation is today a statement of political and religious conservatism. 'Modern art' is expensive junk, but my work is for human beings who admire the cardinal virtues.
