About The Artwork
As I strongly believe that our individual selves are formed by multiple parts that shift and readjust to one another, I have chosen to split the canvas in two or more areas where an image is formed by juxtaposing two shapes, similar but not identical. The two parts belong to two different spaces and atmospheres, yet they form a unity despite their apparent collision. With this work I hope to challenge the common notion of identity as an undivided unity. I often use metal pigments (copper, gold, bronze, pewter, silver) to also address and blur the line between painting as a window on the world and painting as an object in itself. These reflective pigments cannot suggest depth, but they enhance the materiality of the canvas. Equally, the choice exposing raw canvas as part of the composition, aims in the same direction.

Artist Bio: Born in Milan, Maria Scarpini attended the Art High School in Milan. In 1982 she graduated from Universita` Internazionale dell'Arte in Florence with a Diploma in Conservation of Artworks. Self taught as a painter, Scarpini lived and worked in Milan, Florence, Rome and presently in New York. Aside from her artistic activity, she practices the profession of Art Conservator, which gives her a close connection with the physical presence of the artworks.
