About The Artwork

I used to live in a small mountain town. In this town, there was a large tipping rock. Due to liability issues, the rock had been cemented in place. Compounding that irony, the town built a shrine around the rock that was dedicated to nothing in particular. I found the monument quite ironic and after some reflection, decided to use the shrine and its foundation rock as a symbol for the ideas we worship and the empty irony of that worship. After some more reflection, I thought the idea was good but the image was a little static and lacked visual movement. Some ideas popped around in my head and I thought the use of haphazard lumber to support the whole structure would create visual and thematic tension. That was all good but it still lacked something. With an image like this, that's so dependent on ideas, I've learned to add human presence. While working on the painting, I had a dream of children jumping across the loosely placed timbers and that was the final element.
