The young Paul Gauguin climbs in a cherry blossom tree in a garden, standing on a the ladder, imagining, wondering. On Hiva Oa, 1894, the biggest step towards abstract painting was made, culminating in Rothko’s no. 7, 57 years later. Not much later, the only logical consequence was full abstraction in black(s). The young Gauguin, returns, out of abstraction, out of a hatch…back to where it all started. May be a metaphor of life.

Richard Lake is Dutch artist, living in Eindhoven. Based on a deep interest in philosophy and humanism, he creates work to reflect on mankind. His active painting life started in 2020. Inspiration is found in nature, music and all the great art of the past. …We don’t know where we came from or - where we are going. Mankind has the brains to find out, but can’t. Art celebrates that uncertainty. Ecce Homo; why do love, hate, live, die…
