About The Artwork

Whilst living in Singapore I visited the Ginger lily Garden often which is part of the Singapore Botanic Gardens to paint these beautiful statement flowers of the tropics that have an amazing coral pink colour and stand tall out of the deep green foliage of the jungle foliage. Ginger liles are not only a gorgeous tropical bloom but they are a medicinal plant as well as a popular ingredient in Chinese Malay or Peranakan cooking. The bud of the ginger lily is used in several dishes of nyonya food of the Peranakan cuisine. In south east Asia, this torch ginger flower is one of the many important ingredients used for Assam Laksa and kerabu (Nyonya salad), and the “soul” of many Nyonya Assam dishes. The aroma and flavour of the ginger flower also know as torch ginger are like a cross between a Vietnamese mint and lemongrass. The flower has a waxy outside; however, when you cut the flower in half, the aroma and fragrance of the torch ginger filters through. It is a flower that is also used for many medicinal benefits from digestive issues to liver complaints and bronchitis. It is a plant native to tropical South East Asia and the Himalayas. It really is a super power flower!
