You know how it is. You see something out of the corner of your eye, something that catches your attention. You’re on a road you seldom travel. You think to yourself, I’ll stop and investigate that next time I pass. But the next time you do, whatever it was, is not there. Did you imagine it? You reflect on the fact nothing stands still for long. Even so, whatever it was didn’t look very mobile. Months pass, seasons move on. Then, damn me, you drive by again and it’s back. Hold on? Can this be right? Am I making this up? This time you do stop. You make some sketches, take a few photos then go on your way. As you drive you wonder if the photographs will come out? Will the images be there? Ghosts aren’t very fashionable these days. You’ve heard stories told in this area of a ‘verie noble’ mansion house that burned down centuries ago, but no one has been able to find the site. Does the Ghost Tanker disappear to take water to the ancient blaze? Who knows? But at least we now have the painting. NB: Though described on this site as 'acrylic on other', this work is actually painted in oils on a gessoed panel. The panel is made of hardboard, known in the US as Masonite.

United Kingdom
I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
