About The Artwork

Description: The inspiration for this painting was an actual photograph taken in Israel during the 1940s of a shepherd pouring oil on the sheep under his care. Oil was used on the sheep to keep bugs away and to help wounds heal. It is a practice that continues today. The act of anointing with oil is important and deeply symbolic in the Bible. It was done as a mark of respect, during inauguration into a high office, for soothing and curative effects, cosmetically after bathing, and as a sacred preparation for burial. Art can make the invisible visible. My passion is expressing the majesty and mystery, beauty and truth that are revealed through natural and spiritual realms. Life in the intoxicatingly beautiful “big sky” environment in southeast AZ speaks of majesty and mystery and for me inspires the creation of contemporary expressionistic landscapes which often evolve into abstractions. I love the words of Master Painter George Inness who lived in the 1800’s: "I had begun to see that elaborateness in detail, did not gain me meaning.... and produce the sense of spaces and distances and with them the subjective mystery of nature with which wherever I went I was filled. ... I gave way to my impulses and produced sentiments the best I could. . . " To convey the impressions of glory I see all around, I work loosely rather than in detail, using large tools, rarely brushes, and broad strokes to keep the work free, loose and expressive. With oils as my primary medium, I layer over acrylics for depth, often adding materials for texture. Spontaneity is key. Some work incorporates light interactive materials - films splitting light into its spectral colors and sparkling metallic elements. The materials both contrast and complement the luscious paints. A new, dynamic, interactive experience is created as colors and effects change depending on light and viewer’s angle. Painting is an interactive experience requiring sensitivity to what is happening on the canvas as well as in my spirit in order to make the invisible visible.
