The sixth in the Stations of the Cross here shows Christ driving a Cadillac in what appears to be a desert scene in which the sun is either setting or rising (is he heading for Vegas?). He seems to have left his cross behind, and the crown of thorns is flapping precariously from his head - dangerously close to blowing away as he speeds through the landscape. To the left ahead of him are four universal forms, like billboards in the desert. Their meaning in this context is unclear. Although this image came to me and made me laugh, I realise that there is a reference to 'putting down one's cross' - in other words, releasing the burdens of the past (and present) and leading a guilt-free, unburdened life - a life which transcends suffering. The universal forms are a reference to symbols used in islamic (non-representational) art - symbols I saw decorating the halls and courtyards of the moorish palace of The Alhambra in Spain - and which (I realised for the first time) elevate the self beyond the mire and darkness of earthly suffering. Vroooom! (Once finished, this series will be for sale)

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
