Sovereign Silk #6 Painting

My concentration consists of a hybrid process which is oriented through the practice of abstract painting, collage and drawing. Much of my work encompasses an exploration in the dichotomy of the synthetic and natural. My process begins with constructing a multitude of painterly gestures created by making transparent layers of various combinations of acrylic paint, gloss and mat glazing mediums on mylar or Yupo paper. I then cut out the forms and shapes that appeal to me and then arrange a reconfiguration of gestures, brush strokes, mark making, stains and smears by collaging and realigning these painterly motifs to a create a unique hybrid of abstraction and implied figuration. The glossy transparent surfaces refer to the superficial glow of pixelated screens and digital technologies which simultaneously coincide within the physicality of painterly Abstract Expressionist tropes. The result is often mediated as it is spontaneous. A confusion as to what is real or fake, a grappling and critique of the physicality of the organic and spontaneous vs. the synthetic artifice of digital media and technological determinism .
