About The Artwork

Painting in oil of soldier and cat. Painted using a vibrant palette. In this painting, I aimed to capture a moment of hyperreality, where the ordinary is infused with a sense of magic and wonder. At the center of the canvas stands a soldier, his uniform slightly rumpled, his expression caught in a moment of reverie whilst a cat, its form blurred as if in motion, scales his leg. The scene is bathed in vibrant hues, with the soldier's uniform and the cat's fur rendered in bold strokes of color, exaggerating the mundane reality of the moment. Surrounding them, the background is obscured by layers of paint, hinting at the passage of time and the transient nature of memory. Light plays a crucial role, casting soft shadows and illuminating certain details while shrouding others in obscurity. It suggests a fleeting moment frozen in time, inviting the viewer to contemplate the deeper meaning behind the seemingly ordinary encounter between man and cat. Overall, the painting invites viewers into a world where reality and imagination blend seamlessly, where the mundane is transformed into something extraordinary.

I am a British painter living in China. I use travel and the places and people I've seen as an inspiration for much of my work. I am very drawn to the idea of "place" and how various characters live in these environments. My work often explores light and movement in time and I use various techniques to suggest this (dragging paint, smearing it or distressing the surface of the canvas itself). I am primarily interested in creating a mood in my work which will change according to the process. Often the inspiration will serve as a starting point. I like to suggest things with the faces of the characters I paint without spelling anything out explicitly. I enjoy the mystery that an expression might hold or the ambiguity a distorted image might imply. I am currently working on developing a series of large portraits based around characters I've known in the past.
