The inspiration for this very large painting, in brown and sepia, comes from cafe life and, as Borges puts it, "the smell of coffee and newspapers". People sip their coffee and turn the pages, contemplating current affairs. I spent a lot of time in cafes, listening to the murmer of conversation, watching people reading newspapers, some of them with alarming headlines. In experiencing all this artistically and creating the painting, everything seemed to dissolve into a transparency, in which there was an overlap between people at great distances of time and place which I try to reflect in the painting. The colour all became a kind of amber/sepia, the cafe a sort of theatre, the people in the cafe mingled with the characters written about in the headlines, past and future merged.
