Seascape in Red Painting

Inspired by the journal of an uncle, a Royal Navy gunner, during WWII. A seascape of multi-layered paint film built up over a period of many months on a plywood base. An entry in the journal, on Tues 14th November 1944, sheds light on his displeasure at having to paint the ship's deck red, yet again. A deck on which he'd often sleep at night due to his fear of being sunk by torpedoes. During this time he'd often express his relief whenever entering the Red Sea, which was deemed relevantly safe from the threat of U-Boat attack. In his later years I remember helping him to clear out his garage/tool-shed. Discarded pots of paint, over time, had developed thick surface skins, one of which I cut out and used as the starting point for this painting.
