About The Artwork

Rider in front of a Pyramid, Acrylic Collage, 31,5x23,6 inch, 2007. Before the Chephren pyramid of Giseh a bedouin gallops on a purbreed Arab. No other horse is so sustained, so frugal and so philanthropic. With the blood from Arabs almost all horses of the world were improved. Breeding foolishness however ruined the most important horse race of all times in this century nearly completely. The bedouins rides exactly in the direction of two petrified skeletons, which originate from two countries far away: the crocodile comes from the pit of Messel/Germany and the small petrified horn dinosaur from the desert Gobi. Many cubic meters of oil shale had to be split in the pit by Messel, so that this crocodile came to the light of this world. 50 million years ago, when palms were at home in Germany and the annual average temperature was appropriate for well 10 degrees more highly, these 1.10 meters long Aligator in this country felt well. Numerous further crocodiles already were found and conserved in synthetic resin by the paleontologists in the Messel oil shale. The petrified boy of a horn dinosaur right down in the picture had slipped straight out of its 20 centimeters large oblong egg, when death overtook this boy. Already with the brood palm whisk of the corrosive two-meter monster is trained that bone sign over the head, at which the massive jaw muscle was hung up. Left of the galloping bedouin a cutout from another area of the Sahara is fixed: Width of parts of the today's desert were fulfilled of lives millions of years ago. In the Sahara witness petrified Ammonites, used the today's cuttlefishs, from an prehistoric ocean, in Arizona petrified trunks of former forests. As a document for a damper climate remained in earth pounding which is past far into the Sahara also small crater keep petrified, which a hail left impact in the at that time soft soil. Only few stone balls remained of a high country. The Tschigai plateau belonged in the northwest of the Tibesti mountains to the hardly investigated regions of the earth. Hundreds of square kilometers are littered with these meter-large stone balls. They are last remnants of laminated sedimentary rocks. The wind and still unexplored micro-climatic conditions in the moving hard shadow of the sun brought it in form.

Sterzenbach is a painter who creates self-willed dream figures (men, animals, sculptures, rock formations, etc.). Strange and bewitched creatures come into existence, which defy description. Theese magical, surrealistic images have a suggestive effect on the spectator. Sterzenbach about his practice: "I dont know theese creatures, before I see them appearing on paper or canvas. I am often surprised about my own creations. By different techniques like frottage, decalcomany, imprimitation etc. structures come into existence, which Sterzenbach assembles into fantasy figures, without having an exact imagination of what is emerging. Little faces and forms, which Sterzenbach inserts finally in the coarse structures, increase the dreamlike surrealistic radiation of the pictures. You may not try to understand or conceive. It is quite a different world where you have to engage in as a spectator.
