As with all of these pictures, the inspirations are many beginning with the color schemes discussed in alchemical emblem books of the late renaissance and mannerist period. Here as usual applied as kitschy window dresing io situations where annonymous actors are to be found in an erotic setting, perhaps rehearsing some kind of Tantric ceremony. The obvious frisson of the taboo, inter-cultural East 'meets' West characterisation of the figures also, I hope brings to mind the decadence of aristocratic characters who went thrill seeking in the louche environs of 1920s Limehouse, described in the novels of Sax Rohmer, the creator of Dr Fu Manchu. As a child of mixed race parentage growing up in Northern England in the 1970's I enjoyed Rohmers complex relationship with the erotic interaction of occident with orient which he seemed to find both fascinating and terrifying. Such Orientalist romaticising helped me to see my own cultural roots as much more interesting than perhaps they were.
