About The Artwork

This captivating painting depicts a quintessential London street scene in Highgate Village, rendered in the impressionist style. The artist's textured brushwork brings vibrancy to a rainy cityscape, where the gleam of wet pavements and the iconic red double-decker bus catch the eye. A solitary pedestrian, possibly deep in thought, walks alongside a vivid red postbox, a symbol of London's enduring charm. The overcast sky and bare branches suggest a chilly, damp day, yet the painting pulses with the city's dynamic energy. Reflections on the street create a sense of depth and movement, inviting the viewer to step into this urban landscape and experience the blend of everyday life with the historic grandeur of London's architecture, which peeks through in the background.

I am a passionate plain-air painter: painting outside, on location, is essential for creating my landscapes. To capture the feel and spirituality of the moment I have to work fast in plein air before the scene changes and often have to return to the locations several times to directly observe the scene and study the light and colour variations: photographs are a poor substitute to a live impression. I also paint still lives, especially flowers, and figure compositions. Similar to my landscapes I usually paint while directly observing the subject and creating multiple studies to bring genuine emotions onto the canvas.
