About The Artwork
This is a portrait of French singer Serge Gainsbourg, painted in monochrome watercolour on cotton paper. I liked the disdainful demeanour of the original image (the reference is a well-known photograph of him). I like painting in monochrome, in particular using Payne's gray, like here, because it takes one layer of complexity (colour) out of the process, but you are still left with enough to handle in the shapes and the play of shades and light, in the struggle to capture the likeness.
