About The Artwork

Poppy flowers. Ink and watercolours on rice paper. Inspired by the change of seasons and summer sun. Some info on materials and symbolism: I'm using Japanese handmade ink and Japanese watercolours. The ink stick is made by a small family-run ink making business in Japan, with a 400-year history of ink-making. It's the oldest ink-making business in Japan to date. There are two types - one with a cool bluish-greyish tint and the other with brownish, earthy shades. The different tins in ink come soot, collected after burning pine or vegetable oil. Japanese watercolours have vivid pigments, but maintain their transparency, which adds to the effect of transiency of flowers. Unlike Western culture, where red poppies symbolise death and remembrance, keshi no hana or keshi (ケシの花 ) - the Japanese poppies - are more light-hearted and they symbolise fun, love and passion. Poppies are a popular subject of Japanese art and poetry. The artwork is signed, sealed with my personal seal and wet-mounted on another sheet of backing paper (Japanese masa paper). It is ready to be framed or mounted on a scroll. Please use acid-free materials when framing. It is manually cut, please leave a few mm error margin for dimensions. Note that colours may differ due to differences in devices.

Canadian artist based in Malta. I studied oil painting in the South Studio Atelier in Malta. The Atelier follows the great traditions of the Florence Academy of Art, so do I. The transience of life pushes me to create, to capture the moments of beauty I see all around. I also studied Asian art, in China, Canada, and in Japan. Fragile rice paper gives a different feeling. It's the best canvas to express the complex simplicity of ink painting. I am using centuries-old Japanese recipe to mount my own artwork.
