About The Artwork

Below is my writing on this work before it is exhibited in Gallery B53 Arnhem, Netherlands. "I was all wondering while working on this, if this would make so-called... a painting work. Writing, scribbling the letters of poem on fabric and erasing by making brushstrokes on it... repeatedly. In a way, I may have left this work(in point of progress) to some.... conceptual territory. The repetitive progress of writing and erasing was simply inspired from a line of the poem. "I scribbled my name on the earth of starlit hill then covered it with earth." And this verse reflects the agonies, frustration, introspection of the poet, who lived a miserable life and died in prison under the harsh Japanese colonial rule. He had never fought against the Japanese colonial army, neither joined independence fighters. As just a helpless poet, intellectual, maybe there was nothing that he could do beside outpouring the tragic reality, faint hope, sort of self-accusation or self-denial through his poems. The mockeries, sarcastic remarks of "Can poems change the world?" must have persecuted him until his death. And as you know, the aguish the poet might have had may still exist in this era for you and me both. "Can paintings change the world?" This will fly to Netherlands next month along with another large scaled painting of mine to join a group show held in Arnhem. The show opens on April 7th at Gallery B53 Arnhem,Netherlands." Hand written poem in Korean with conte, gesso and house paint on fabrics I sewed and stitched myself.

Korean Painter, Sculptor Born in 1962, Studied at Hong Ik University majoring in Painting(BFA) Lives and works in Paju,South Korea. - "All the ideas for this 'Paddling' Series come from playing in the water or paddling on the water. Your thought on where the brushstrokes begins and ends just make sense in that point. Because when you paddle on the water, the act of paddling appears on the water and then disappears. In that sense, it's meaningless to find where it starts and ends and even meaningless to distinguish 'drawing' action from 'erasing' action on water. That's how I drew the concept of 'drawing on water', so to speak, onto the canvas in this series" - 2020, Yoon Joo
