About The Artwork

If you turn right from the Yegoryevskoye Highway in front of Gus-Zhelezny, then after a few kilometers you can get to the ancient village of Pogost, or Gusevskoy Pogost. This village stands on the banks of the Gus River not far from its confluence with the Oka. In Russia, an administrative-territorial unit was called a churchyard. For the first time, such a division was established by Princess Olga in the 10th century, dividing the Novgorod land into "graveyards", setting "lessons" for them (a fixed amount of tribute or work that had to be completed by a certain date). The churchyard was thus associated with the place where the prince and his squad stopped during the collection of the lesson - the guest house. With the adoption of Christianity, churches began to be erected at churchyards. In the XV-XVI centuries graveyards began to die off, and the word graveyard acquired a second meaning - a lonely standing church. And only, starting from the 19th century, the word began to be used mainly in the meaning of "cemetery". In the 17th century Pogost was a serious commercial competitor to the nearby Kasimov. Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov received complaints from the Khan of Kasimov, Seid-Burgan, that "in Guskom graveyard ten versts from Kasimov, local district people started bargaining without permission ... and they trade duty-free on Sundays." That is why all the sellers "taught to drive past Kasimov and began to trade in the Gusevsky graveyard", which is why "Kasimov's auction became empty." It took the intervention of the king, so that there was no bargaining in Pogost. However, Gusevskoy Pogost continued to flourish. Now only the magnificent temple complex, which is an architectural monument of federal significance, reminds of the former prosperity of the village.
