This image of the garden at Orsett Hall, Essex, was first painted in 1967, and called, unimaginatively, Orsett Garden. I painted it in oils on hardboard - you can see the result on the Gallery page of my website. Back then, being self-taught, I had not learned about under-painting. I was dissatisfied with the result but didn’t know why. That was the reason I didn’t offer the painting for sale. Since then, having taught myself the merits of under-painting, I’ve always wanted to repaint the scene. Finally, I got round to it in 2010. If you compare the two pictures online, there’s not that much difference. In real life the difference is marked. Under-painting is almost like back-lighting a picture. I also added the portable easel and white panel in the new version, making the picture yet another ‘self-portrait in absentia’. NB: Though described on this site as 'acrylic on wood', this work is actually painted in acrylic on a gessoed panel. The panel is made of hardboard, known in the US as Masonite.

United Kingdom
I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
