About The Artwork

This painting is heavily textured in hand formed ceramic bead forms. It was created just before the volcanic eruptions in Iceland that stopped air traffic in Europe occurred. I was working in Iceland 2009-2011 on a self directed project called Orogeny and associated art residencies. I was working with Icelandic volcanologists and British psychologists looking at the relationship between earth, body and psyche. The volcano that then erupted was the volcano that happens to be the life's study of the same volcanologist I was working closely with. She (the volcano) was so unlikely to erupt that the volcanologist had removed the technology around her only the week before because the equipment was needed else where in Iceland on other volcanoes much more likely to erupt. She was said not to erupt in hundreds of years .I painted this before there were signs of any eruption. She burst through meters of ice as she lies beneath a glacier. I was looking at this activity as a metaphor for the unpredictability of human life. It is 300 cm wide made up of 3 panels each 100 cm wide.

I've worked as an artist since 1975: painting & drawing, using ceramics, wood and fibre for sculpture, earth for permanent site specific installation, and video for live art performance and 'artist’s moving image'. I also write poetry and create mixed genre works. Whilst my materials and techniques change, my themes remain constant. I'm interested in the relationship between sexuality & spirituality, and how we hold and navigate life-death tensions of our existence. Born of mixed heritage and educated in New Zealand, Canada, UK, Europe, I’m influenced and inspired by diverse spiritual practices; Moire culture, Native American ritual and craft, Buddhist philosophy and Roman Catholic iconography. My 'Gratitude Mandalas' link closely to my personal spiritual practices of meditation, mindfulness and compassion. It is my hope that my work offers the viewer a place for contemplation, another perspective, some space to find clarity and ease.
