About The Artwork

Dolgor Ser-Od was trained as a painter with a strong traditional influence that is unique to Mongolian landscape painting. In particular, her work is directly influenced by the Urga School of painting and from the work of the Baldugiin Sharav. Ser-Od’s mastery of this style has a particular significance in Mongolian contemporary art, signaling the rediscovery of traditional Mongolian culture during and after the 1990s, due to the end of the Soviet regime and a newly found artistic freedom. It is in this context that the first version of Denjiin Myanga was realised by Ser-Od between 1997 – 2003. The painting is a large representation of Ulaanbaatar with at its thriving and pulsating heart the so-called Black Market, one of the most distinctive and unique social public spaces in the city. After the collapse of Soviet Union in 1989, Mongolian boarders opened towards both Russia and China, allowing travel and business in a way that was not possible before. In this time the market in Ulaanbaatar developed very quickly, to become a symbol of the transformative energy that swept Mongolian economic life. In and around the market the life of the city is represented with vibrant details that are drawn directly form the artist living memory of the place, with the traffic jams, the market stalls, the gers, the animals, the trade and the labour of a city that in a crucial moment of transformation. In this contemporary adaptation of of traditional Mongolian painting, Ser-Od poured a whole motley city crowd, which she witnessed in person during the transition towards a capitalist model of development. That city, which today has already transfigured into something new, was and still is the subject of an ongoing struggle and adjustment between the survival of a way of life that is so unique to Mongolia and the relentless advancement of global economic and social infrastructure.
