About The Artwork

The image area contained within, and including, the border measures some 23 x 44 cm. The dimensions given elsewhere include the mount. The artwork is currently framed within a simple oak frame with an off white mount. The inner dimensions of the window mount, the aperture, are 312 mm x 500 mm. The exterior dimensions of the mount are 630mm x 450mm. The frame is solid oak and measures 484mm x 665mm. The moulding is 21mm deep and 23mm wide. The poem is by Kahlil Gibran (b.1883), a Lebanese born artist and poet. His poetry is beautiful and I wanted to make a work that featured one of his love poems. The style of the calligraphy is inspired by early Kufic, an Arabic script. I very much admire the various Arabic calligraphy hands: they are beautiful, graceful and elegant. I have attempted to adapt some of the forms of Kufic to the english alphabet, as seen here in this piece. The border is inspired by Persian and Arabic art and illuminated Qur'ans. The border is part gilded using imitation metal leaf and copper leaf. The other colours in the border are green, red and blue. In the Qur'an, the colour green is given special status and it is also said to have been the colour of the Prophet Muhammed's turban. In the Bible and the liturgy, it is associated with the life eternal, hope and the Holy Ghost. Gold is symbolic of joy and divinity. The words of Kahlil Gibran are so beautiful, I felt that a border to frame and present the words would be an appropriate addition. The motifs within the border are abstract leaves, vines and flowers. Some of the elements are also redolent of birds wings. Together with the use of colour, it can be seen as a reference to the Garden of Eden, the paradisical, eternal garden. In this way, the flowing, weaving design of the border reflects the sense of the words of the poem: the eternal, boundless, enduring nature of true and selfless love. The use of gilding brings life and movement to the piece. Gold is also incorruptible, unchanging, enduring. It is symbolic of Divine Love and Light, which is eternal and encompasses all.

I was born in Anerley, Penge, UK in the year of the Rooster. All the rest of my family are Snakes.... :-) I've loved art all my life - I'm a compulsive doodler. I hope that I have now, through my artworks, taken doodling to a whole new level ;-) The main inspiration for my work is early Celtic. One day, many moons ago (more than I care to admit to), I saw a reproduction of a page from the Lindisfarne Gospels. I thought: "Wow! How do you do that?". So I set about trying to find out. Doodling alone can only take you so far. There comes a time when you have to seek out those who know more than you, and this led me to The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London. I did look at all the usual art colleges, but we weren't really singing from the same hymn sheet, shall we say. At the PSTA I met many wonderful, unique, learned and inspiring people - such as Prof Emeritus Keith Critchlow, Dr Martin Lings, Dr Nassar Mansour, Aidan Hart and many others. Through their teachings and example, I gained new understanding of art, life, the universe and everything ;-) So I now probably fit in with standard art colleges even less than before. Is that good or bad? My paintings are entirely hand made and are executed mostly in egg tempera, acrylic and gold leaf on paper, calfskin vellum, glass or gesso panel. I make my own quills and egg tempera paint, regularly raiding local Welsh beaches for shells to use as paint palettes (they work well and they're free - what more can I say?). I do not, however, grow my own cows or make my own vellum (very yukky process). I am very happy to let someone else do that bit. Each painting can take up to four weeks to complete. Most of that time is spent on drawing out the design, using a set of Victorian compasses, a sharp pencil, a ruler and lots of tracing paper. I live in Burry Port, South West Wales with Himself and our large, dribbly dog.
