About The Artwork

This painting was executed in various experimental phases. The work is a continuation of a previous work entitled Trees in Water. Here I have zeroed in on the central plane of Trees in Water and executed it onto a 5 feet canvas. When the image of the finished painting Minds Eye in Water is rotated at a particular speed (see YouTube link below) as a video installation, a cornea area of the eye can be discerned. This work conveys the dyslexic experience of the propensity to daydreaming or mind wandering. Many dyslexics will recall being reprimanded at school for seemingly staring out the window into space. In my case I would look at the trees. This daydreaming or mind wandering is in fact a strength for the dyslexic whereby one is holistically gathering thought and often useful when being creative. The work then conveys the watery glistening cornea area of the eye. Oil on 5 feet square canvas. Completed in 2022. See the work as a video installation here: https://youtube.com/shorts/vxUYl_ElQdY https://youtube.com/shorts/GR0XMhjN9XQ

I have always been interested in art. I grew up in the countryside in a large family of eight siblings; two of whom were also artists. I won two awards in art as a child at school. PE and Art were the only areas I was able to achieve in. Forty years later I was found to be dyslexic. This epiphany changed my thinking and understanding of myself in many ways. I began to paint water in my twenties as I was fascinated by it. The jewel like aspect. It is a difficult thing to apprehend as it is kinetic. I believed that by studying this subject area I would learn techniques through diligence and the difficulty endured by trying to paint and draw something in motion. I then became fascinated in the aesthetical nature of reflections and refractions and how these abstract forms can be realised into stylised patterns. Whilst living in City of Wells (during my younger years) I would often go out in the rain (sometimes perilously avoiding the lightening), camera in hand. This was before computer technology was as accessible and prevalent as it is today. So I would develop my analogue SLR camera footage and manually crop images to draw from and then paint.
