Mexico City Painting

My current practice explores the way in which fungal objects can be used as a stand-in for what is alien and apocalyptic and unperceived: a challenge to our anthropocentric vision. I enjoy the dynamics this fungal practice affords me with the control I have over the objects as well as the uncertainty and element of surprise that they provide. To me, they embody the opposite of monumental, grotesque, imposing, and spectacular and instead represent a shyer yet resilient way of being. Fungi's ability to survive in the dark and colonize other materials makes them a perfect medium to imagine a world that ends with them as the sole survivors. They are small and intricate, and did not evolve to prioritize esthetics- they coexist with us hidden from our view. In a similar way, the mycelium paintings have a quietly cosmic quality to them, transporting us to much larger or smaller worlds.
